Obituary for Jack Coign

Jack Coign
Calvin, KY --- Jack Coign, 90, died on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, TN, after having a stroke on Tuesday, May 8.
Jack was born August 1, 1926, while his parents were visiting her parents at Fourmile, KY. He was the son of Jesse Goodin Coign and Robert Weaver Coign later of Fourmile. Upon his death, Jack was the oldest and longest member of Riverview Baptist Church serving nearly 50 years. Through the years he faithfully served Riverview in many capacities including Sunday School Director and Deacon; he even served the Sunday prior to his death.
Jack served in the Navy during WWII for three years from 1944- 1947. He served aboard the repair ship USS Delta and the Seagoing Tug USS Tekesta ATF-93 in the Pacific. After his military service he worked at Brandenburg Gibson Hardware in Pineville, KY. Later he was employed by the Kentucky Utilities Company where he met the love of his life, Joyce Greene. They married March 10, 1951, at Riverside Baptist Church of Fourmile, KY. In February 1952, they were blessed with their only child, Farley Scott Coign. In 1958 they built one of the first all-electric homes in Bell County at Calvin. They loved this little acre of land so much that they referred to it as “Valley View Estate”. At this home, they worked together to rear Scott, to care for her aging parents and uncle, to serve their little church, to help Jack recover after the helicopter crash, and to care for Joyce when she became gravely ill. Even though there were trials on this little acre, they lived happily together until Joyce’s death in 1988. Until Jack’s dying day; this little acre was the only place he wanted to live. A special thank you to David and Jeannie Warren, who helped make it possible for Jack to remain at his beloved home until his death.
Jack married Mary Margaret Green Engle on January 23, 1991. They were happily married for seventeen years until her death.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Greene Coign, and his second wife, Mary Margaret Greene Engle Coign and all of his siblings: Robert Weaver Coign, Jr., Wylene Coign Drummond, Roy E. Coign, and Myrtle Coign Woolum.
Survivors include his only son, Farley Scott Coign and daughter-in-law, Mary Ruth, both of Middlesboro, KY and his only grandson, Jon Coign of Crane Hill, AL. Jack is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Jane Cox Coign, Mary K. Greene, Pamela Coign, his brother-in-law, Robert Woolum, and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by step- daughter, Jeannie Engle Warren and her husband David Warren; step-son, Kenny Engle of Tazewell, TN; step-grandchildren Christy Barnes and (David) Bubby Warren; 6 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great granddaughter. Jack dearly loved Seren Barnes, a step-granddaughter. Seren brought interest and joy to Jack’s last years. Jack was kept company by a special four-legged companion, Buddy Russell. Because of Jack’s kind, gentle, Christian ways; he was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
